Unit 5 What are the shirts made of?  
Section A 1 (1a-2d)  
Period 1: Listening and speaking
Ⅰ. The analysis of teaching material.
 The lesson is the first lesson of unit5. The type of this lesson is listening and speaking. The topic of this unit is about what the shirts made of, which is close to students’ interest in learning easily. The function of this lesson is about what the shirt made of. And the structure of this lesson is made of, the teacher will let students learn to talk about their shirts made of , at the same time, students can learn the key sentences and phrases.
 In this lesson, by learning about the topic of what the shirt made of, students can learn and understand the basic sentence pattern of what are the shirts made of.
Ⅱ. The analysis of learning Condition
 The students are from a junior middle school in the countryside. They are in Grade 9. Most of the students are in the medium level of English and they are not good at listening and speaking. The topic of this lesson is “What are the shirts made of”, before this lesson, students have learned some words about raw material which lays the foundation for this lesson, but the new words and sentence patterns such as  The shirts made of...may be a little difficult for students. Since the topic of this unit is closely related to students daily life and students are interest in learning, this lesson will not be difficult for students. In class, the teacher will use a variety of teaching methods to help students to learn the words and sentences of what your material made of. According to the characteristics of Grade 9 students, we all know that their cognition is high, and this lesson will be closed to the real life. Thus, students will be more easy to learn the new knowledge.
Ⅲ. Teaching Objectives:
According to the key points and difficult points in this unit, combining with the learning situation of students in this class, and referring to the New Curriculum Standard of English, the teacher sets the following objectives.
A. Knowledge objectives:
1) Students can say and recognize the following words:
Key words: chopsticks, coin, fork, blouse, silver, glass, cotton, steel, grass, leaf, produce, widely, be known for, process, pack
2) Students can understand the following sentence patterns:

Key sentences:
①  —This ring looks nice. Is it made of silver?  
—Yes, and it was made in Thailand.
②  What is it made of/from?  
③  China is famous for tea, right?  
④  Where is tea produced in China?  
B. Ability objectives:
①Students can describe and inquire about the materials of the articles in English.
②Students can understand the usage and sentence structure of passive voice.
C. Emotional objectives:
 ①Students can understand the materials of some daily necessities;
②Students can increase common sense of life, develop good living habits;
③Students can understand the production process and materials of some local famous products or traditional artworks, and cultivate students' national pride and patriotism.

A. Key points:

Students can understand the usage and sentence structure of passive voice correctly.
Ⅴ. Teaching method & aids
A. Teaching methods
1. Task-based Language Teaching Approach (Teachers assign different tasks to students in different stages of listening and ask students to practice with questions, which will make it easier for students to learn words and sentence patterns.)
2. Communicative Approach (Through the pair work, students will be encouraged to communicate with the teacher and their partners.)
3. Audio-lingual Method (Listen to the tape several times, complete the exercises and try to retell the listening content. Then students try to imitate the dialogue. Students will improve their skills of listening and speaking. )

Step 1 Warming up
1. Present the sentence structure, using the pictures on the big screen:
   —What’s the golden medal made of?
   —It’s made of gold.  
   —Is this table made of wood?
—No, it isn’t. It’s made of glass.
—Is Butter made from meat?
—No. It’s made from milk.
【Purpose】 This step is based on the Communicative Approach.Students by watching the picture to get the students’ attention. Students can make full preparation for the following study.
Step 2 Presentation
1. Show some pictures on the big screen. Try to learn the new words using “be made of” structure.
Learn the new words: chopsticks, coin, fork, blouse, silver, glass, cotton, steel, grass, leaf
2. Ss discuss with their partner and try to learn the new words.
3. Give Ss five more minutes to remember the new words.
4. Work on 1a:
Let Ss read the things and materials in 1a. Discuss with their partners and match them with the materials. More than one answer is possible.
What are these things usually made of? Match them with the materials. More than one answer is possible.
Check the answers with the Ss.
【Purpose】This step is based on the Communicative Approach and Task-based Language Teaching Approach. Through presenting the new words and sentences with pictures, students can learn the new words and sentences in an interesting way.
Step 3 Listening
1.    T: Tell Ss they will hear a conversation about some things and material. Listen and match the products with what they are made of and where they were made.

2. Let one student read the words in the box, Play the recording for the Ss to listen.
3. Ss try to listen and match the things with the material and here they were made.  
4. Play the recording again. Let Ss answer the questions.
 1) How much did Susan pay for the three shirts?
   29 dollars.
2) What does Anita feel about the three shirts?
   Cheap.
3) What are the shirts made of?
   Cotton.
4) Where were they made?
   America.
Step 4 Pair work
1. Read the conversation in the box in 1c.  
2. Ss try to made conversations using the information in 1b.  
e.g.  A: Your new shirt looks very nice. Is it made of cotton?
B: No, it isn’t. It’s made of silk.
3. Let some pairs read out their conversations.
【Purpose】This step is based on the Communicative Approach and Task-based Language Teaching Approach.Through doing pair work and pair work, students can practice the pronunciation and intonation.
Step 5 Listening
Work on 2a:  
T: Let’s listen to another conversation between Nick and Marcus.  
1. What are they talking about? First, let’s look at the pictures and the phrases in 1a.
 (Let one students read the phrases in 2a.)
 Listen and check ( √ ) the main topic of Nick and Marcus’ conversation.

2. Play the recording for the Ss to listen and check the phrases.
3. Play the recording again to check the answers.
【Purpose】This step is based on the Audio-lingual Method and Task-based Language Teaching Approach. By listening to the key information of the material, students will learn how to grasp key words while listening. And by doing more listening practice, students can further master the words and sentence patterns of this lesson.
Work on 2b:
1. Let Ss read the sentences below. Explain some main sentences for the Ss. Make sure they know what to do.
2. Let Ss read the questions in 2b. Make sure they understand the meaning of each question.
Play the recording for the Ss to answer the questions.  (If necessary, using the pause button.)
1) Where is the art and science fair?

2. Let Ss make their own conversations.
3. Practice their conversations in pairs.
Step 7 Role-play
1. Work on 2d
Read the conversation and complete the blanks.

【Purpose】This step is based on the Communicative Approach. After the learning has done, students need to recall the key points, and try to remember them in the class.
Step 9 Homework
I. Make a new conversation by using the key phrase “made of/from”.
II. Record what materials furniture is made of and list at least five.
【Purpose】The teacher asks students to recite the conversation in order to help students to memorize the sentences pattern easily. It can help students consolidate what they have learned in this lesson and lay the foundation for the next lesson.
