Period 1 : Section A (Grammar Focus-3d)
I. The analysis of teaching material
The teaching material is the grammar part in this unit. The topic of this unit is how to talk about physical appearance. The topic is not new to the students,it is very important and difficult for students to learn the what question and alternative questions . After the class, the students should remember the important adjectives of description, and they can also ask and answer what questions and alternative questions.
II. The analysis of the students
Most students from the rural school have an average English level, and they are not good at grammar. This unit is for the students who are from Grade1 in junior high school. As junior high school students, they may feel curious or worried about English learning, so I design different kinds of activities to help them to understand and learn the language points. That can not only help them to overcome their fear, but also can make them enjoy the success in English grammar. In this way, I think the students can learn more from my class and have lots of fun.
III. Teaching objectives
According to the curriculum standard of English, the teacher sets the following objectives.
A. Knowledge objectives:
1. Through the explanation of the “what” question, 80% of the students can answer it correctly.
2. Through the explanation of the Alternative questions, 90% of the students can answer this kind of questions fluently and correctly.
3. 80% of students can use the new words and sentence structure to make their own dialogues. And some lower students can modify the sentences by changing the key words.
New words: handsome, actor, actress, person.
New sentences:
What does he/she look like? He’s really tall./ She has long straight hair.
Do they have straight or curly hair? They have curly hair.
Is he tall or short? He’s isn’t tall or short. He’s of medium height.
B. Ability objectives:
After the learning of grammar and practicing the dialogue in pairs,
1. Students will be able to read those sentences in grammar focus fluently and correctly.
2. 80% of students will be able to ask and answer “what” questions and Alternative questions.
3. Through the role play and the exercises, 70% of the students can learn how to use the grammar to talk about others’ physical appearance correctly, meanwhile, through making conversations, most students can improve their ability to use English grammars.
C. Moral objectives:
Through the process of talking about people’s physical appearance, students can know how to describe people’s looks.
IV. Key points & difficulties
A. Key points:
1. Students can pronounce the sentences in grammar focus fluently and correctly. Meanwhile, they can understand the meaning and usage of those sentences.
2. Students can use the sentence pattern “What does he/she look like?” “She/He is…”, “Is he tall or short?” “He/She is…” to ask and answer people’s physical appearance.
3. Students can improve their ability of understanding English grammar by making conversations.
B. Difficulties:
1. Students have difficulties in “What” questions and Alternative questions.
2. Some middle level students can understand a little bit long conversations.
3. As the students have a limited vocabulary, so they may have some difficulties in communicating with others about describing people’s looks fluently and freely by using the grammar.

Step 1 Revision
1. Greeting to the class.
2. T: Let’s review. How to describe a person’s appearance?
Students should say some important tips that they learned last class.
3. According to the pictures in power point, students should answer how to describe those appearances.
【Purpose】This step is based on the Communicative Approach and Task-based Teaching Method. By greeting to the students, they can get ready in class quickly, and students can strengthen the memory of some adjectives of appearances that they learned last lesson by doing this reviewing tasks.
Step 2 Presentation
1. Play a game (Let’s be detectives)
A. Find the thief
B. Find the hit-run driver
2. Look and guess. (What does he/she look like? ---David, Sally, Peter)
【Purpose】This step can attract students’ attention, and students can be interested in this class and have a deep impression of some new words.
Step 3 Work on 3a
1. Students will write these words in the correct box.
2. Students will judge those words should use is or has.
3. Do a summary.
【Purpose】This step is based on the Task-based Teaching Method. Designing an activity just like 3a, students can say some usual words about describing people’s appearance. And it can students know the correct phrases collocation.
Step 4 Work on 3b
1) Circle the correct words to complete the conversation.
A: So what do/does your friend Clark look like?
B: Well, he is/has thin, and he have/has black hair.
A: Really? Is/Does he tall or short?
B: He is/isn’t tall or short. He is/has of medium height.
A: Does he has/have curly or straight hair?
B: He is/has straight hair. And he is/has really handsome.
2) Translation(using “have/has” or “There is/are+n.+place/time”)
1. 她有一個大背包。
2. 課桌上有本書。
3. Mary有一些紅色的襯衫。
4. 墻上有兩幅畫。
5. 我在學校里有許多朋友。
6. 一個星期有七天。
【Purpose】This step is based on Task-based Teaching Method. Students need to choose right words to complete the conversation after learning the grammar , so they can further practice the grammar and learn how use it in some exercises.
Step 5 Work on 3c-3d
1) Answer following two questions:
1. What does your favorite actor or actress look like?
2. What does your favorite teacher look like?
3. Students discuss with their partners, and then some students should describe their favorite person in class.
2)Work on 3d : Describe someone in the class. Ask your classmates to guess who you are describing.
【Purpose】This step is based on the Task-based Teaching Method. From describing their favorite person, it will gradually help students to learn how to find important and obvious features to describe people’s appearances.
Step 6 Exercise
1) Talk about your family members.
1. A: What does your father/sister… look like?
B: He/She has/wear/is…
A: Does he/she have/wear…?

2. Do a report
2) Look at the picture, and describe him/her.
3) Game play: Mystery Student(Who is he/she?)
【Purpose】This step is based on the Task-based Teaching Method. Students will do more exercises to practice the language points and grammar.
Step 7 Summary
1. Students should say what did they learned in this lesson.
2. Students summarize the important words and sentences by using the blackboard design.
【Purpose】This step is based on the Task-based Teaching Method. It can help students to improve their ability of summing up.
Step 8 Homework
1. Remember the sentences in grammar focus.
3. Finish the exercises in the workbook.
Level A students:1. Make two short dialogues based on the information in grammar focus.
2. Recite the grammar focus.
Level B students: 1. Copy the grammar focus and 3b .
2.Read the grammar focus fluently and correctly .
【Purpose】Reciting the language points is good for students to accumulate the expressions, and it’s necessary to do exercises to check if students understand the language of the class.
