Unit 2 I’ll help to clean up the city parks (Section B 1a—1e)

Period 4 : Section B (1a-1e)

I. The analysis of teaching material

The teaching material is the second listening and speaking part in this unit. The topic of this unit is volunteering and charity. The topic is very important to the student. Students should learn to protect environment in reality. After learning the first lesson and grammar lesson, students will have a good base on this lesson. But there are also some new words and phrases in this part. After the class, the students should remember the new words and new sentence patterns.

II. The analysis of the students

Most students from the rural school have an average English level, and they are not good at listening and speaking. This unit is for the students who are from Grade1 in junior high school. As junior high school students, they may feel curious or worried about English learning, so I design different kinds of activities to help them to understand and learn language points. That can not only help them to overcome their fear, but also can make them enjoy the success by speaking and listening. In this way, I think the students can learn more from my class and have lots of fun.

III. Teaching objectives

According to the curriculum standard of English, the teacher sets the following objectives.

A. Knowledge objectives:

1. Through the explanation of the new words, 80% of the students can pronounce and read those new words.

2. Through the explanation of the new sentences and the role play, 90% of the students can read the new words and sentences fluently and correctly.

3. 80% of students can use the new words and sentence structure to make their own dialogues. And some lower students can modify the sentences by changing the key words.

New words: repair, fix, wheel

New phrases: run out of, take after, fix up, give away

New sentences:

A: What do you do? B: I fix up…

B. Ability objectives:

After the learning of new words and sentences and practicing the listening and speaking in pairs,

1. Students will be able to know how to find the key words while listening.

2. 70% of students will be able to make short dialogues like 1e.

3. Through the role play and the exercises, 80% of the students can learn how to use the new words and sentences to talk about offering help correctly, meanwhile, through the listening practice and the conversation, most students can improve listening and speaking skills.

C. Moral objectives:

Through the process of talking about volunteering and charity, students can learn to protect environment and help others.

IV. Key points & difficulties

A. Key points:

1. Students can pronounce the new words correctly. Meanwhile, they can understand the meaning and usage of those words.

2. Students can use the adjectives of description to describe people’s more features at the same time.

3. Students can improve their listening skills by finding key words.

B. Difficulties:

1. Students have difficulties in using some new phrasal verbs.

2. Some middle level students can understand a little bit long conversations.

3. As the students have a limited vocabulary, so they may have some difficulties in communicating with others about offering help fluently and freely by using the new sentence structure and more phrasal verbs.

V. Teaching method & aids

A. Teaching methods

1. Task-based Teaching Method (Through the activities, students will finish the tasks.)

2. Communicative Approach (Through the pair work, students will be encouraged to communicate with the teacher and their partners.)

3. Audio-Visual approach (Through tasks of listening and speaking, students will improve their skills of oral English.)

4. Audio-visual approach (Through showing some pictures to learn new words, students can understand and remember them easier.)

VI. Teaching procedure

Step 1 Warm-up

1. Greeting to the class.

2. T: Daily greetings to the students.

S: Get ready for the class. (Open the textbook and say hello to teacher.)

PurposeThis step is based on the Communicative Approach. This step is based on the Communicative Approach. By greeting to the students, they can get ready in class quickly.

Step 2 Presentation

1. Enjoy a song: Helping hands.

2. Discussion:

1) What’s your feeling after watching the video?

2) Do you like to help others? Give an example.

3) How to be helpful?

PurposeThis step is based on the Audio-visual approach, it can attract students’ attention, and students can be interested in this class and have a deep impression of some new words.

Step 3 Work on 1a-1b

1. Work on 1a

1) Students will match the sentences with similar meanings.

2) Students will share their answers with their classmates.

3) Game: Who is the spy?

2. Work on 1b

Match the phrasal verbs with the nouns. Then make sentences with the phrases.

3. More examples.

PurposeThis step is based on the Task-based Teaching Method. Designing an activity just like 1a&1b, students can say some usual words about describing people’s appearance. And students can learn how to use some phrasal verbs. It can also set up a good base on the listening tasks.  

Step 4 Listening (1c&1d)

1. Listen and number the pictures in the correct order.

2. Listen again. Circle T for true or F for false.

1) Jimmy fixes up broken bicycle parts, like wheels. T F

2) Jimmy sells bikes.   T F

3) Jimmy takes after his mother.  T F

4) Jimmy has run out of money.  T  F

3. Listen again and match the following sentences with the pictures above.

1) Jimmy fixes up broken bicycle parts, like wheels.

2) Jimmy gives bikes away to kids who don’t have enough money to buy one.

3) Jimmy finds bikes that nobody wants.

4) Jimmy has run out of money.

PurposeThis step is based on the Audio-Visual approach. Students need to circle true or false with the key points and do the pair work after listening, so they can further practice the intensive listening skills and learn how to put out new words and new sentences.

Step 5 Exercise

1. Group work:

In your group, go on the conversation and think up some ways to get money for Jimmy.

2. What do you think of their ideas?

3. Do 1e: Pair Work

Role-play a conversation between Jimmy and the reporter. Use the information in 1c and 1d.

4. Free Talk: Did you help others recently? Share one thing in class.

PurposeThis step is based on the Task-based Teaching Method. Students will do exercises to practice the language points.

Step 7 Summary

1. Students should say what did they learned in this lesson.

2. Students summarize the important words and sentences by using the blackboard design.

PurposeThis step is based on the Task-based Teaching Method. It can improve students’ ability of summing up.

Step 8 Homework

1. Remember the words and expressions.

2. Finish the exercises in the workbook.

Level A students: Make two short dialogues based on the information in this lesson.

Level B students: Read and recite these sentences in 1d fluently and correctly.

PurposeReciting the language points is good for students to accumulate the expressions, and it’s necessary to do exercises to check if students understand the language of the class.
