Unit 1 How can we become good learners ? (Section A 1a--2d)

Period 1 : Listening & Speaking

I. The analysis of teaching material

The topic of this unit is about talking learning methods and learning habits.And the function is to use "The special interrogative sentences introduced by how" and the answers to communicate. Students need to learn how to use "how" questions to talk about learning methods and learning habits. What they will learn in this lesson is pretty practical. It’s a good to learn English by doing. This is the first lesson of Unit 1, so the main task of Period 1 for students is to improve the skills of listening and speaking.

II. The analysis of learning condition

Most students from the rural school have an average English level, and they are also not good at listening and speaking. So they will be encouraged to practice more in listening and speaking. The students of Grade 9 have learned ‘how questions’ before,so they won’t be very strange for the topic of this unit. Meanwhile this lesson will be closed to the real life. Thus, students will be more easily to learn the new knowledge.

III. Teaching objectives

According to the curriculum standard of English, the teacher sets the following objectives.

A. Knowledge objectives:

1. Through the game and pair work, 80% of students can pronounce and recognize those new words& phrases according to pictures. And at least 60% of students can master how to use them.

New words& phrases: aloud, pronunciation ,flashcard, vocabulary,conversation, sentence,patient

2.More than half of students can use the sentences’ structure to make their own dialogues. And some lower-level students can modify the sentences by changing the key words.

New sentences:1. How do you study for a test? ---l study by working with a group.

 2. Do you learn English by watching videos?  

3.Do you ever practice conversations with friends?

4.What about listening to tapes?

5.What about reading aloud to practice pronunciation?

6.Have you ever studied with a group?

B. Ability objectives:

After learning of new wordsphrases and sentences and practicing the listening and speaking in pairs

1. Students can find out the key words while listening.

2. 70% of students will be able to make dialogues about how to become a good learner.

C. Moral objectives:

Through the process of learning something about learning methods,it can stimulate students’ interest in learning English and develop students’ good habits of learning English.

IV. Key points & difficulties

A. Key points:

1. Students can pronounce the new words and phrases correctly. Meanwhile, they can use them correctly.

2. Students can use the sentence structures :How do you? l study by.

B. Difficulties:

  1.The usage of "by".

2.lt is difficult to .

3.The more you read,the fast you will be.

V. Teaching method & aids

A. Teaching methods

1. Task-based Language Teaching Method (Through activities, students will finish the tasks.)

2. Communicative Approach (Through the pair work, students will be encouraged to communicate with the teacher and their partners.)

3. Audio-lingual Method (Through tasks of listening and speaking, students will improve their skills of oral English. )

Step 1 Warming-up and leading-in

1. Greeting to the class.

2. Free talk:

1)How do you go to school?

2)How do you study for a test?

3)How do you learn English?Let's see how others do it .So today we will learn unit 1How can we become good learners?

PurposeThis step is based on the Communicative Approach. The step can arouse the interest of students and lead to the topic.

Step 2 Presentation

1).Please look at the pictures and see how others study for an English test.

-----How do you study for an English test?

-----l study by working with friends/making vocabulary lists/reading the textbook/reading aloud/making word cards/asking the teacher for help/listening to types/watching English-language videos.

2)Work on 1a. (check the ways you study for an English test.Then add other ways you sometimes study.)

3).Summarize the usage of "by."Please observe the phrases carefully,what can you find?

PurposeThis step is based on the Communicative Approach. Through presenting the new phrases and sentences by pictures,,students can learn the new language of "by" in context and practice phrases and sentences in an interesting way.

Step 3 Practice

1.Work on 1c. (pair work: How do you study for a test?)

Listening practice

2.Work on 1b.(Listen.How do these students study for a test?Write letters from 1a above. )

3.Work on 2a&2b.(First listening:listen and check the questions you hear.Second match the questions above with an answer below. )

Speaking practice

4.Work on 2c. (Pair work:make conversation using the information in 2a and 2d.)

5.Work on 2d. (a:role play the conversation. b:language points.)

PurposeThis step is based on the Audio-lingual Method Communicative Method and Task-based Language Teaching Method, By making conversation in pairs can make their impression deeper.And on the process of listening,by listening to the key information of the material, students will learn how to grasp key words while listening. And by doing a pair-work after listening , students can put out the target language, it can further practice the speaking skills and learn how to use new words and new sentences.Through doing a role-play, students can practice the pronunciation and intonation. And they can accumulate more expressions of task language.

Step 4 Production

1. Group work:make a survey and then do a report.


PurposeThis step is based on the Task-based Teaching Method. By discussing how they study for a test in groups,and then do a report. students can put out the target language.

Step 6 Summary

Ask students to make a conclusion about what we learned in this lesson.

PurposeThis step is based on the Communicative Approach. After the learning has done, students need to recall the key points, and try to remember them in the class.

Step 7 Homework

1.Copy the new words and phrases for 3 times and make 2 dialogues.

2.Role-play 2d in pairs.

PurposeThis step is based on the Task-based Language Teaching Method. Students need to apply what they have learned by making dialogues. It’s necessary to do exercises to check if students understand the language points of the class.
