Unit 5 What are the shirts made of?

Section A (Grammar Focus-4c)

Period 3: Grammar

Ⅰ. The analysis of teaching material.

This is the third class of unit 5. The type is grammar focus. It’s main content is to learn the words about articles and making materials and the usage of be made of, and talk about the making materials and producing areas of daily necessities in a passive voice. The purpose is to help students learn to apply the passive voice, broaden our horizons and enrich our experience by being familiar with the articles we often use around us. In this lesson, by learning about the topic of talk about what are the shirts made of, students can learn and understand the basic sentence pattern of passive voice, further understand the usage of passive voice.

Ⅱ. The analysis of learning Condition

The students are from a junior middle school in the countryside. They are in Grade 9. Most of the students are in the medium level of English and they are not good at listening and speaking. The topic of this lesson is “What are the shirts made of”, before this lesson, students have learned some words about passive members which lays the foundation for this lesson, but the new words and sentence patterns such as The shirts made of...may be a little difficult for students. Since the topic of this unit is closely related to students daily life and students are interest in learning, this lesson will not be difficult for students.

In class, the teacher will use a variety of teaching methods to help students to learn the words and sentences of what are the shirts made of. According to the characteristics of Grade 9 students, we all know that their cognition is high, and this lesson will be closed to the real life. Thus, students will be more easy to learn the new grammar focus.

Ⅲ. Teaching Objectives

According to the key points and difficult points in this unit, combining with the  learning situation of students in this class, and referring to the New Curriculum Standard of English, the teacher sets the following objectives.

A. Knowledge objectives

 1) Students can say and recognize the following words

 boss, Germany, surface, material, traffic, postman, cap, glove

2)Students can review and consolidate the new words and phrases learned in Part

B. Ability objectives

1) Students are able to summarize and inquire about the production materials, production locations, production processes and other sentences of the inquired items.

2) Students are able to master the passive voice proficiently, Students can master the usage of the passive voice, and through different ways of practice

C. Emotional objectives

Students are able to understand the materials made of some daily necessities, increase common sense of life and develop good living habits.

Ⅳ. Key points and difficulties

A. Key points

1) Key words: boss, Germany, surface, material, traffic, postman, cap, glove

2) The usage of the passive tense.

B. Difficulties

1) Students can explore and learn to inquire about the production materials, production location, production process and other sentence patterns of objects.

2) Students can focus on the usage of the passive tense.

Ⅴ. Teaching method & aids

A. Teaching methods

1. Task-based Language Teaching Approach (Teachers assign different tasks to students in different stages of listening and ask students to practice with questions, which will make it easier for students to learn words and sentence patterns.)

2. Communicative Approach (Through the pair work, students will be encouraged to communicate with the teacher and their partners.)

Step 1 Warming- up and revision

1. Have a dictation of the new words learned in the last class.

2. Review some main phrases we learned in the last class. Check the homework.Purpose This step is based on the Communicative Approach.Students by watching the picture to get the students’ attention. Students can make full preparation for the following study.

Step 2 Grammar Focus.

Read the sentences in grammar focus,then fill in the blanks.

你的襯衫是棉的嗎?

PurposeThis step is based on the Communicative Approach and Task-based Language Teaching Approach. Through presenting the new words and sentences with pictures, students can learn the new words and sentences in an interesting way.

Step 4 Practice

1. Work on 4a:

Tell Ss to read the sentences in 4a and try to fill in the blanks with the correct forms of the verbs in brackets.

Learn some new words.

2. Work on 4b:

1) Students read sentences, understand the meaning of the sentences and prepare for sentence conversion.

2) Analyze sentence by sentence to determine the proper tense of the words in parentheses.

3) Finally, read through the sentence for a comprehensive understanding to see if the sentence is smooth and reasonable.

4) Check the answers with the Ss.

Learn some new words.

PurposeThis step is based on the Task-based Language Teaching Approach. By practicing, students will learn how to use it in a correct way. And by doing more listening practice, students can further master the words and sentence patterns of this lesson.

Step 5 Talking

1. Ask five classmates about something they are wearing or have in their schoolbags. The list of words below may help you. (Learn some new words.)

2. Let one pair read out the conversation in the box as a model.

3. Remind students to use the example words in the box on the left.

4. Let the students play freely in groups and talk about the materials and production locations of their items in English.

PurposeThis step is based on the Communicative Approach. After the learning has done, students need to recall the key points, and try to remember them in the class.

Step 6 Homework

Please turn the following sentences into passive voice.

1. We use computers to search information.

2. The teacher often repeats the story.

3. They don’t allow fishing here.

4. Bill looks after his cat carefully.

5. We don’t often speak English at home.

PurposeThe teacher asks students to investigate what your family members used to fear in order to help students to memorize the sentences pattern easily. It can help students consolidate what they have learned in this lesson and lay the foundation for the next lesson.
